Art history is rife with great myths and romantic tales that intrigue generations of viewers and allow us to travel through time and space to witness history’s most important moments. But all is not what it seems – history, as narrated by art, often conceals a less ideal, less romantic truth by way of being predominantly narrated by the Western, White males on whom the canon focuses. Many great artworks and artefacts created by non-Western, non-White artists have been ignored, lost, stolen, destroyed and otherwise hidden from sight – where did they go, who took them and why, how were they found (if they have been) and were they returned to their rightful owners?
